Laura Martin Bovard Blog

Laura Martin Bovard

Designed by: Laura Martin Bovard

My friend and designer Laura Martin Bovard just launched her blog, http://www.lmbinteriors.com/posts/.  It is a beautiful site, as is her work. Laura and I chatted about how designers these days need to actually produce content about their work in addition to producing their work.  It seems it continues to get more challenging to be an interior designer.  Best of luck to Laura with her blog!

Clarke & Clarke Event in San Francisco

Shane Reilly_Duncan ClarkeI had the pleasure of meeting Duncan Clarke at the San Francisco Duralee showroom last week.  Duncan showed us the latest collection.  You can see many pieces here on the Clarke & Clarke page on Decorati.  I love the bright colors and patterns.  It was fun to hear the history of the company and what it’s like for two brothers (the Clarkes) to work together.

DIFFA Dining By Design Guest of Bobby Berke

Last night I had the pleasure of dining with Bobby Berke and a small group of his stylish friends… at the DIFFA Dining by Design party in NY.  Bobby designed a streamlined, modern space completed with flower buckets attached to the wall.  We got to hear a bit about Bobby’s adventures overseas as he makes plans to expand his business in Asia.  Thank you Bobby for a delightful time!  I have a video of the table I will post.

While at DIFFA I got a moment to catch up with Tucker Robbins and Laura Kirar.  Tucker was just back in NY after an extended stay in the Middle East and Laura told me all about her new fabric collection.  It’s always a please to talk to these two.

Every design project has its challenges. See a couple of the tough decisions I had to make on a recent San Francisco project. This project is published in this month’s California Home & Design magazine.

When Designer Robert Couturier Talks, Just Sit Down and Listen

Designer: Robert Couturier

While there is lots of discourse about the changing role of the interior designer, the DIY movement, and the accessibility of products via the web, there are a small number of designers at the top of the field who continue to work with the same principles they have embraced for years.   These designers are not Luddites, on the contrary, they often adopt the latest technology.  They have to, since technical advances continue to push progress in all service-oriented businesses, and of course, their clients demand it.  These designers only work on big projects, around the world, and they live the life of around-the-clock service, curating the homes of a guarded list of celebrities and dignitaries.

Robert Couturier is one of these designers.  I first spoke with Robert years ago when I interviewed him for my book.  I enjoy talking with Robert for a number of reasons. First, he really knows what he is talking about when it comes to interior design.  His lifetime of experience designing in a variety of countries and his knowledge of art and decorative art history casually infiltrates the conversation in a way only a pro could handle effortlessly.  Listening to him, I get an urge to take notes like a student.  Second, when in his company, I find myself proud to be a designer because he explains what we do as an art.  For a brief moment in time I can forget everything I know about the business side of the design industry and just think about why I love to be around interior design.   I love color, composition, the texture of beautiful fabrics, the feel of a well-made table… and Robert does too.  Even his tales about traveling and shopping with clients conjure up an element of romance about our profession.  Third, I find Robert to be fresh.  He is what he is.  He makes beautiful homes for people who can afford it.  He wears his identity comfortably and confidently, and it would be amateurish to confuse his focus with snobbery.  In fact, Robert is a very down-to-earth person (who meets with his trainer way more than I do!) and is a delight to talk to.  Watch the show.
